“Boos” filled the Akron Aeros stadium as Mayor, Don Plusquellic paid tribute to the now gold medalists and NBA champion, LeBron James.

The NBA MVP returned to his hometown to receive the special award and celebrate his foundation’s first anniversary of the “Wheels for Education” program, which serves to provide third graders with the support and mentors they need to succeed.

Despite the “booing,” James said Sunday was about the kids.

“That’s what I’m mainly here for and that’s why I’m excited to be here. You know, our future right here [gesturing towards the kids] they’re gonna make sure that not only Akron but our world be a better place as well.”

Stephanie Cook attended with her daughter and said, “It’s very exciting especially for the kids because they all look up to LeBron. They wanna meet him.”

Cook’s daughter is in the “Wheels for Education” program and described her work so far as reading and learning to use the computer.

“It’s excellent,” the third grader said. Cook said it will only prepare her daughter for this new school year, “They had all the kids make a promise to read books, stay in school … so it’s a positive thing.”
