OTTOWA, Canada — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is resigning as leader of his Liberal Party but will remain prime minister until a new leader is chosen.
He made the announcement Monday, calling it the “best for the country.”
Trudeau has served as the country’s prime minister since 2015.
His decision comes as he has faced falling poll numbers ahead of a general election many analysts predict he will lose.
Trudeau’s Liberal Party is anticipated to lose to the opposing Conservative Party in the general election that is to be held on or before October 20th.
Trudeau has been at odds with President-elect Trump over the past couple of weeks.
Trump has threatened to impose up to a 25-percent tariff on all Canadian goods if Trudeau did not deal with the increase of migrants entering the U.S.
Trump also jokingly referred to Trudeau as governor of the 51st U.S. State.
