Well, We Don’t See This Every Day…

Imagine sitting down at the dinner table, and your dad—the guy who once taught you how to tie your skates—casually mentions he just traded you for future considerations. That’s exactly what went down in the AHL this week when Utica Comets GM Dan MacKinnon shipped out defenseman Will MacKinnon—his own flesh and blood—to the San Jose Barracuda.

Now, sure, sports are a business, but this is some cold business. The return? Nothing… yet. Just the mysterious “future considerations,” which could be anything—a draft pick, a low-tier prospect, or maybe a promise to send a nice Father’s Day card next year.

Maybe none of the above!

If this sounds wild, just imagine LeBron James getting full GM powers and trading Bronny Jr. for cap space. Not saying he would, but, well… Cavs fans remember “The Decision,” so would we really be that shocked?

As for Will MacKinnon, hopefully, he gets some free meals out of this deal—at the very least, a few sympathy dinners from teammates. One thing’s for sure: Thanksgiving at the MacKinnon household just got real awkward. Do they even pass him the mashed potatoes after this? Or does he have to wait for “future considerations” before getting a plate?
